If you're a fan of Indian cinema, then you've probably seen a few Bollywood movies. However, not everyone understands the conventions of India's film industry. Here's what it is and how it works. In order to have a successful career in Bollywood, one needs to have access to both talent and connections. The Indian film industry has been around for over nine decades now, having begun as early as 1911 during the British colonial rule of India. In those days, many Indian movie theaters showed Hollywood films accompanied by Hindi-language projectionists who translated the dialogues into Hindi for audiences not familiar with English language. This was part of an effort to promote the use of the Hindi language and familiarize people with English. As a result, many Indians started speaking and understanding English, which is why it's still the language of Bollywood today. Gone are the early days when money was raised for making movies by asking local businessmen for donations. The industry now has its own set of producers, investors, production houses and distributors. Movies are often funded by private investors who put up a certain amount of money to make a movie without any guarantees that it will be profitable at the box office. The first step is to develop a script and submit it to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Once the script is approved, it's time for the pre-production phase, which includes casting and location scouting. Production begins once the necessary permits are secured from various government agencies such as those responsible for commerce or those who issue film release certificates (also known as censor certificates). Filming takes place in various studio sets as well as on location. Post-production activities include editing and mixing of sound and music, adding visual effects and then color correction. The movie can now be screened in theaters which will then distribute it via DVD, Blu-ray and digital download (for viewing on computers and mobile devices). The Bollywood movie industry is loosely structured. The main area of operation is Mumbai, India's largest city. While some Bollywood movies are made in Hindi-speaking areas such as Uttar Pradesh, some are also produced in non-Hindi areas such as Kerala or Chennai. Bollywood movies are meant to appeal to the largest possible audience, so most are made with the use of local dialects and with minor variations depending on which state they're being distributed in. A few movies have been dubbed for export to other countries but most Indian distribution companies only provide subtitles with their releases. Bollywood movies usually have a running time of 2 hours or more, rarely exceeding 3 hours. The standard Bollywood film has three acts, with the first act consisting of the introduction of the main characters. Act two is where the main plot begins to unfold and act three closes out all loose ends. Here's a short summary of some common Bollywood movie conventions: The opening scene is often set at a café, temple or marketplace. This usually serves as an introduction to the character that will be guiding or influencing the movie's plot (such as an overprotective father, a con artist or someone in love).
